Textiles and Sew On
This course is structured to further develop students use of the sewing machine while developing a knowledge and interest in this area. Sewing skills are practiced by producing a wrist band pin cushion, pillow case and a pair of simple boxer shorts. The course emphasis is on cutting and pressing skills, construction methods using straight stitch and zigzag settings along with an introduction to basic fibre classification and the woven structure of fabrics. Work is evaluated both from the efficiency of their work habits through to the quality of the finished products.
Textiles is an engaging subject to study because it is hands on and provides opportunities to develop skills such as perseverance, teamwork and time management. Studying Textiles is valuable as it teaches us about reducing environmental pollution by reusing fabric in a fun and creative way. It is also rewarding because it provides us with a finished product at the end of the semester.
